Montevideo

Kara says:

Hola chicos.

Holy Friday, only a week left in BA! I'm having withdrawal symptoms, it's home now, we can't leave. Town seems to be pretty much closed down for the long weekend, alot of people have gone somewhere, not sure where, maybe Mar del Plata. And the Bolivian president wasn't getting his own way and so has gone on hunger strike! Now how come Bertie/Johnny never thought of that? It's pure genius.

No gossip, we're not that exciting, but I have some photos of Montevideo that I haven't put up yet - possibly of interest to some people who might be planning to visit Uruguay in the not too distant future and yet do not yet appear to be in possession of plane tickets...

Doesn't this look tempting...chocolate waves! Even thought Montevideo is further down the mouth of the river than BA it's still basically a chocolatey river with waves straight out of a Cadbury ad. But there are cheerleaders. Everywhere. Can't get away from them. Honestly guys, you should buy your tickets today!

So. Montevideo. An old colonial part, a new ugly shops and tower blocks part, some very nice coastal suburbs and a long prom going from the dodgy towerblock part of town all the way to the nice beachy bits. Lots of middle aged uruguayos running/plodding along the prom and some great christian graffiti along the prom wall saying things like "Feeling tired? Jesus will give you strength".

We wandered down to the beach and found some qualifiers for the FIFA beach football world cup. All the south american teams were there. So there was no moving Karl for the rest of the day. Well technically they are international football players. And actually, world's easiest autograph from an international football player - the uruguayan team were encircled by a few fans but all the other teams were just pottering back to their buses and no-one seemed to care. Course I didn't care either but if i had it would've been easy.

And this is me soaking up the atmosphere on our balcony. More faded colonial splendour - our hotel was fresh from the 30's and must have been very fancy indeed back then. I think the women running it were from the 30's too.

The Irish pub invasion has arrived in Montevideo. I had a green beer. I thought the "verde" was a description of the flavour of one of the microbrewed beers but no. It was green. All natural I'm
sure.

These are pictures from the main Plaza. A very impressive building from the 30's (?) that was once the tallest building in South America (or southern hemishere or something). And on the other side of the plaza, just for balance, the world's ugliest building - this picture does not do it justice, it is a million times uglier that that.

Unfortunately I don't have a picture of the world's best steak sandwich. They have the absolute best steak sandwiches in Uruguay - chivitos - with fabulously tender juicy lean steak, onion, peppers, hard boiled egg, ham, melted cheese, lashings of mayonnaise .......I'm salivating, I have to stop now. I also don't have a picture of the waiters wandering up and down the street at lunchtime - complete with waistcoats, aprons and silver platters - delivering lunch orders in style.

Eso es todo. Going out for dinner. Will probably do a blog before we leave BA.
