Iguazu Falls, Argentina & Brasil.

Kara says: i have a sneaking suspicion that this blog entry is particularly disorganised and i would like to apologise in advance. Also I tried to be fancy and add a couple of videos so no guarantees how that's worked out.

Iguazu. It's all about falling water. Iguazu falls are the biggest waterfalls in the world, i think by volume of water (?), and i saw somewhere there's over two hundred separate falls. It's on the border of Argentina and Brasil and is a u-shaped waterfall and then a string of waterfalls stretching down-river a bit. It's very cool. Kara says: We saw them from all angles and took photos from most. From above where the river looks perfectly pleasant for an afternoon boat-ride until it opens up and sucks you into a white foaming hole. From above watching the river just disappear over the edge. From below enjoying a power-shower (see little soggy me on the walkway). From a boat up close to the base of the falls. I think i know now what it's like in a dishwasher - bobbing around on churning water splashing into the boat while being sprayed mercilessly. But probably more fun than a dishwasher. See photo of karl wringing out his clothes afterwards. He cleverly chose to wear a fleece which is, as you'd know, famous the world over for it's water resistent properties. Also photo of Karl money-laundering after the boat trip. And now for some manly, engineeringy, big stuff. Went to Itaipu dam - world's largest (by kilowatt capacity. After the Three Gorges Dam is done it'll have a larger capacity but Itaipu will still be the largest generator in the world because....and then the propaganda got a little sketchy on hard facts) hydro-electric plant - on the border of Paraguay and Brasil. Very impressive actually. Supplies 90% of Paraguay's power and 20% of Brasil's. That's alot of power. And a big dam - see photo, there's an ugly 70's six storey building for scale. The water comes through the white tubes, the flow in each (EACH) tube (impressive fact coming up) is twice (twice!) the average flow over the Iguazu falls (have you seen those falls!!!!? Brenda, tell them how impressive that fact is). Other photo of the dam/resevoir spillover thingy opened proving that men can make water fall too. Men are wonderful. And Karl proving he still has a way with the birds. A little nervous initially, sure, but having his sleeve nibbled in no time.
